Peter & Paul: part 2

Written by David on October 21st, 2008

Tonight at my small group one of the leaders mentioned a verse that reminded me of the post I did a few days ago. It was entitled “peter and Paul” and I discussed an idea that I already brought up concerning the children of Israel. Basically I’ve found a propensity in conservative American Christianity to give examples mainly of shining examples of faith (ex. Paul) but not the “failures” like Peter. Or when we do, we don’t really focus on the failures and how that can be just as much us as him.

There is this verse, Proverbs 24:16, and what I take away from that verse is that we’re to expect some failures in even the lives of the righteous. We’re not perfect in our current state so why do we expect perfection? Why do we teach stories of radical change and transformation that I feel so few of us ever have or will experience? Rather for most of is our journey of faith is more like hiking a backpacking trip through mountanous wilderness. Plenty of up, down, scrapes, bruises, mountain tops, valley, and ridge lines or valley floors of little change.

But that doesn’t inspire or sell or fill seats so I’d guess it is a victim of it’s on reality.
